Sleepless night

Days passed, but Dara couldn’t shake the unease. Every time she looked at Kelechi, her heart pulled in two directions — love that was pure, and a longing that frightened her.

One afternoon, she found herself standing in front of Chike’s wardrobe. His shirts still hung neatly, carrying the faint scent of his cologne. She pressed one against her face, eyes shut, breathing in the ghost of a man she once loved.

But when she opened her eyes, it wasn’t Chike’s face she imagined. It was Kelechi’s.

Her knees buckled, and she sank to the floor. What is happening to me?

Kelechi too was restless. In school, his friends laughed, talked about girls, plans, football… but he was distant. His thoughts always drifted back to his mother — her sadness, her smile, the way she looked at him sometimes, almost as if…

He shook his head. No. It’s wrong. It has to be. But the echo of her touch haunted him.

Deep connection 

That night, as Dara tucked herself in, she heard a knock. Kelechi stood at the door.

“I… I couldn’t sleep,” he admitted.

“Come,” she said, her voice softer than she intended. He sat on the edge of her bed, shoulders tense. Silence filled the room.

Then Kelechi whispered, “Sometimes, I hear Dad’s voice. When I look at you, it feels like he’s still here.”

Tears welled in her eyes. She reached for his hand — just to comfort him. But when their fingers laced together, it no longer felt like mother and son. It felt like two lonely souls clinging to the same ghost.

And the echo of love — past and present — refused to fade.
